Coco Gauff recently made a bold comment that the WTA was more competitive than the ATP, highlighting the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. This divided tennis fans, who shared mixed reactions on social media.
Gauff, who is preparing to face Jessica Pegula in the first round of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, explained that the WTA has four different winners at the Grand Slam in 2025. While, in men’s tennis, Alcaraz and Sinner shared the four titles.
Sharing his opinion on the matter, Gauff said that although the WTA was competitive enough, the ATP needed a third competitor.
“It’s great to have four different Grand Slam champions this year. All the girls had a competitive year across the board and I think it makes the sport more exciting when there are multiple chances of something happening. Although Carlos and Jannik are doing very well, there is talk of the need for a third person to make it more interesting,” said Coco Gauff.
The American tennis star’s comments were echoed by many, sparking mixed reactions from fans on social media. Disagreeing with Gauff’s opinion, one of the X users wrote:
“All this and the ATP is still much more marketable and attracts more viewers. The lack of real WTA stars like Carlos and Jannik is why it’s so ‘competitive’.”
Another fan on social media echoed the 22-year-old’s thoughts, commenting:
“Perfect!!! Atp is in the cemetery era. Outside, the top 2 virtual musical chairs are underway.”
One of X’s followers disagreed with Gauff’s thoughts, writing:
“Who said it was more interesting? Does anyone really think that? I don’t.”
Another follower with the same opinion as above wrote:
“Someone tell him it’s not more interesting.”
Agreeing with Gauff’s thoughts, one of the users wrote:
“She’s not wrong. I stopped following the ATP because we know who will be in the tournament before it starts.”
In the same spirit, another fan chimed in:
“No lies detected.”
