DUBLIN: Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach Simon Harris said his country “will not be silenced” in its criticism of Israeli actions in Gaza, following the closure of the Israeli embassy in Dublin.
Harris accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of engaging in “distraction diplomacy”, while reiterating Ireland’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself. However, Harris strongly condemned Israel’s conduct in Gaza, expressing pride in Ireland’s support for the Palestinians.
“You know what I find objectionable? Killing children, I think that’s wrong,” Harris told reporters. “You know what I find objectionable? Given the scale of civilian deaths we have seen in Gaza.”
“You know what I find objectionable? People are starving and humanitarian aid is not arriving. »
The embassy closure follows Ireland’s decision last week to support an International Court of Justice petition accusing Israel of genocide.
Irish Foreign Minister Michael Martin said the decision was “motivated by nothing other than respect for international humanitarian law.” He added: “Ireland’s use of international courts… where there can be international accountability for war crimes in any part of the world, including Gaza, should not be seen as an act hostile “.
