The Montreal Canadiens defender Lane Hutson was not invited to the US team’s Olympic orientation camp in August. The event was supposed to bring together players who could potentially make the last list of the United States for the 2026 winter Olympic Games, which will be held in Italy in February, during the NHL break.
Hutson spoke on Monday, previous comments made by his father, Rob Hutson. The subject appeared during the annual Habs golf tournament. Hutson was asked about his father’s remarks on a podcast. Hutson replied with a smile and a joke and said:
“Which clip? No, I’m just (pleasant).”
He clarified his position on his father’s comments.
“You know, he becomes emotional or something else,” said Hutson. “And, you know, sometimes, it gets the best of you and you say things you don’t necessarily want to say, and maybe it has come out of your context or something else. But, I am proud to be American and, you know, love American hockey. They have done so much for me.
“And I also like to play Canada and that, you know, I’m very lucky. But, you know, I’m a hockey player in the United States and that’s how it is.”
What was Lane Hutson’s father Rob Hutson, said?
Earlier on the Habscast recruitmentsRob Hutson said that Lane Hutson and his brothers have Canadian passports. He said that double citizenship creates possibilities for the future.
“Listen, and you never know what’s going on in the future,” said Rob. “As, my boys are also Canadian. So, yes. … There is an absolute luxury there. And many great players have been left out for the Olympic Games and things like that.
Rob also compared the situation to the changing countries of Brett Hull. Hull was born in Canada with a double citizenship, but he chose to represent the United States internationally. He won the 1996 World Cup and the 2002 Olympic silver.
“And, you know, I think Brett Hull could have been one of them,” said Rob. “I think, you know, he voted with his feet, he went from Canada to the United States. As, there are, there are all the types of scenarios that are … I would not say at stake, but are possibilities, right?”
Lane Hutson was left aside the list of the USA Olympic Orientation camp, which included 44 players. Being left out was a surprise because he scored 66 points in his recruited season, with 60 assists, and won the Calder trophy. He helped Canadians play the playoffs after several years.
