The United Nations:
Friday, the United Nations General Assembly against the United Nations General Assembly voted for an overwhelming majority to approve a declaration describing “tangible, time -related and irreversible measures” to a solution to two states between Israel and the Palestinians before a meeting of world leaders.
The seven -page statement is the result of an international conference at the UN in July – organized by Saudi Arabia and France – on the conflict for several decades. The United States and Israel have boycotted the event.
A resolution approving the declaration received 142 votes in favor and 10 against, while 12 countries abstained. The vote comes before a meeting of world leaders on September 22 – on the sidelines of the UN high -level general assembly – where Great Britain, France, Canada, Australia and Belgium should officially recognize a Palestinian state.
The declaration approved by the general meeting of 193 members condemned the attacks against Israel by Hamas fighters on October 7, 2023, which sparked the war in Gaza. He also condemns Israel’s attacks on civilians and civil infrastructure in Gaza, headquarters and famine, “which led to a devastating humanitarian disaster and a protection crisis”.
The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barrot, said that the resolution had ensured the international isolation of Hamas. “For the first time today, the United Nations adopted a text condemning it for its crimes and calling for its surrender and its disarmament,” he said in a post X.
The resolution was supported by all the Arab States of the Gulf. Israel and the United States voted against him, with Argentina, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palaos, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Tonga. The declaration approved by the resolution indicates that the war in Gaza “must end now” and support the deployment of a temporary international stabilization mission mandated by the United Nations Security Council.
The United States has described the vote as “another moved and poorly informed advertising” which has undermined serious diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. “Make no mistake, this resolution is a gift to Hamas,” said US diplomat Morgan Ortagus to the General Assembly.
“Far from promoting peace, the conference has already prolonged the war, embraced Hamas and injured the prospects for short and long -term peace.” Israel, who has long criticized the UN so as not to condemn Hamas by name for the attacks of October 7, rejected the declaration as a unilateral and described the vote as the theater.
“The only beneficiary is Hamas … When the terrorists are those who applaud, you do not advance peace; you are advancing terrorism,” said Israel’s ambassador Danny Danon.
