Tokyo:

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said on Sunday that he would resign after a year in power, during which he had lost his majority in the two chambers of Parliament.

The announcement means a new uncertainty for the world’s fourth economy as it fights against the increase in food prices and deals with the fallout from American prices in its vital automotive sector.

Ishiba told a press conference that the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) for a long time should prepare for a leadership election, and he would remain in a position until then.

“Now that negotiations on American tariff measures have reached a conclusion, I think it’s the right time,” he said.

“I decided to withdraw and make room for the next generation,” said the 68 -year -old man.

US President Donald Trump signed a prescription on Thursday to reduce prices on Japanese cars, Washington finally moved to implement a commercial pact negotiated with Tokyo in July. AFP
