The Kobe Shinwa University made a strong first impression in the PVL Invitational, Balaying Zus Coffee, 25-14, 27-25, 25-17, Saturday at Philsports Arena in Pasig.

The only Japanese representative of the tournament after the withdrawal of Kurashiki Ablaze, Kobe Shinwa showed his brand speed and cohesion to keep control of most of the match.

Setter Sakura Furuta ran the offensive with 18 excellent sets and won the best honors of the game. She mixed fast games with rear attacks that allowed nine teammates to contribute to the attack.

Nagisa Komatsuda scored 15 points to lead Kobe Shinwa, while Kokono Yasuma added only 12 sets.

“We are happy to have played Zus Coffee. It is a great experience,” said Furuta through an interpreter.

Zus Coffee, who had only one day of preparation and played without the Setter Cloanne Mondonedo and Alas Pilipinas Blocker Middle Gagate, organized his greatest fight in the second set.

Kate Santiago and the WIELYN Estoque recruit sparked a late thrust which gave the Thunderbelles an advance of 25-24, but Kobe Shinwa recovered to steal the frame and take advantage of it.

Santiago finished with 13 points for Zus Coffee, while it was added 10. Sharya Ancheta and the newcomer Riza Nogales raised seven and five, respectively.

Kobe Shinwa closed the match in 69 minutes, running a quick advance in the third set and without dropping.

The Hyogo-based team was originally to play in the 2022 invitation, but had to withdraw due to the COVVI-19 protocols.
