MOSCOW:
A volcano broke out for the first time in 450 years in the Russian Kamchatka region of Russia, the country’s emergency authority said on Sunday, a few days after one of the strongest earthquakes ever hit the region.
The images published by the Russian state media show an imposing panache of ashes spitting the Krasheninikov volcano, which launched for the last time in 1550, according to the global volcanism program of the Smithsonian Institution.
It is estimated that the plume has reached an altitude of 6,000 meters (19,700 feet), said the ministry of Kamchatka emergency situations in an article on Telegram.
“The plume propagates east from the volcano to the Pacific Ocean. There are no populated areas along its way, and no fall of ashes has been recorded in inhabited localities,” said the ministry.
The volcano has received an “orange” aviation danger code, added the ministry, which means that flights in the region can be disrupted.
He came after Klyuchevskoy, another volcano in the region – the most active in Europe and Asia – broke out on Wednesday.
