San Miguel Beer maintained its stand that the PBA technical committee should not have canceled the Mo Tautuaa dunk, which was considered an interference from the basket, during the last seconds of TNT 99-96 victory in match 1 of the Filipino Cup final on Sunday.
It was even after the Beermen chose not to pass with a potential housing of a formal protest against the overthrow of the Slam of Tautuaa with 56 seconds on the left which initially put the Beermen forward by one.
“Basically, the letter of protest is a (exercise) futility,” said Abanilla in an SMS at the Inquirer the day after the opening of the championship. “(The League) prevented our argument with its press conference (after match 1).”
Deputy Commissioner Eric Castro and the member of the Bong Pascual Technical Committee, a FIBA veteran arbitrator who has repeatedly officiated at the Olympic Games, was held by the decision to cancel the Tautuaa basket which restored Tropang 5G’s advance to 97-96.
Not only was the controversial call made, but it was also a correction made 50 seconds after the Taultuaa slam. The game continued until the Jordan de Tnt and Chris Ross de San Miguel is making a jump ball during a loose ball situation.
“As you can see in the replay, Mo dipped the ball in the 56 seconds, but he had pulled the ring,” said Castro.
Castro cited rule J-5 declaring that “an attacking player makes the panel vibrate or enter the basket in such a way that, in the judgment of the official, the ball was led to enter the basket.”
The Governor of the Robert NO team was not convinced of Castro’s explanation. Earlier, the generally gentle official had to be retained when he stormed the Technical Committee table after the final buzzer.
Not only did not think that Tautuaa did a legal game, but an exam should have been done on site.
“They should have examined it immediately,” said no. “Mo dipped the ball, he quickly released his hand, the ball plummeted and he entered.
“How can it be an interference from the basket?” He added. The rules of the PBA, however, make it possible to make opinions if the call had been made on site.
The controversy took the end passionate about the competition which saw the San Miguel rally of 24 to take the lead in the last minutes.
TNT, on the other hand, was hot from the downtown early to take this great lead. Tropang 5G was supported by the return of Kelly Williams and RR Pogoy for injuries.
But the lucky breaks, including the superb reversal of the Tautuaa dunk, were something that TNT Chot Reyes coach did not care.
“I know I have been on the other side of those of the past,” said Reyes. “So it’s just something we are very lucky and we will enjoy.” Inq
