GENEVA:
MPOX remains an international public health emergency, the World Health Organization said on Thursday after having decided that the epidemic still deserves the highest level of alert, the increasing cases and its enlargement of geographic spread.
“The MPOX update continues to meet the criteria of an emergency in public health of international concerns (Pheic),” said a statement.
The MPOX Emergency Committee met for the third time on Tuesday and informed who chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that the situation was still a pheic.
The decision was “based on the continuous increase in the number and geographic spread, violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo – which hinders the response – as well as a lack of funding to implement the response plan,” said the brief press release.
Tedros concluded the committee’s advice, extending the Pheic declared for the first time on August 14 of last year.
