LONDON:
A large number of British farmers led their tractors to Parliament in London on Monday to protest against a new tax on successions on family farms that sparked anger since its announcement last year.
They gathered to express themselves against the modifications proposed to the laws on successions taxes, which would force them to sell their land, according to Protestant farmers.
The plans of the Labor Party in power to introduce a tax rate of the heritage of 20% on the farms sparked great protests in November and December.
Like previous events, farmers entered Westminster Klaxonnant and holding panels saying “We all need a farmer”, “Food security first” and “Let’s Standing Together”, among other slogans.
Addressing Anadolu, Ed Mason, a Protestant farmer, said that they could probably not pay the tax when he comes into force next year.
“We were likely to sell a quarter of our land, which makes us more unprofitable,” he said.
He added: “We produce cheap food for the country. We are not supported, and we are asked to pay more and more taxes.”
Jack Macintosh said the current state of the world market makes what they produce much more difficult to sell, adding that prices are not registered either.
Nigel Farage, head of the Political Party of Recor UK, called on farmers to pursue “persistent and peaceful” campaigns on the new rules of successions tax, claiming that Labor deputies with rural districts will be “afraid”.
Future demonstrations will exert pressure on the government if they see that “local communities will be behind these families” to be affected by the proposed changes.
The changes, announced in last year’s budget and which should come into force in April 2026, scratching an exemption which meant that no tax on successions was due in family farms.
