Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres responded to transfer speculation surrounding his future at Sporting CP, amid manager’s departure Ruben Amorim at Manchester United.

Amorim’s move to the Premier League has fueled rumors that Gyokeres, who has an £83million release clause, could follow suit and leave the Portuguese champions.

However, the 26-year-old striker claims he has yet to be contacted by anyone at Old Trafford.

“It’s very sad that he’s leaving, but of course we understand his decision,” Gyokeres told Fotbollkanalen. “He obviously meant a lot (to me) given that he gave me this chance and made me develop so much.”

Asked about the links with Manchester United, Gyokeres was dismissive, saying: “He (Amorim) probably already has strikers there, so we’ll see. No, he didn’t (contact) me. It’s amusing but nothing that I attach importance to because it’s just words and nothing concrete.

The Sweden international, who has been a reported target for Arsenal, stressed that his priority was to secure a significant role and playing time, rather than a specific destination.

“That you have an important role and that you can play. That’s the most important thing. There are other things that need to be put in place as well, but I’ll take them when they come.

Amorim’s departure from Sporting has raised questions over the future of the club’s key players, with Gyokeres now addressing speculation surrounding his own situation.

Arsenal and other interested parties will be monitoring the situation closely as the January transfer window approaches.
