Japanese kickboxing icon Takeru Segawa has been open about his mental health struggles, both in his personal and professional life.
Given his status as a martial arts superstar, “Natural Born Krusher” wants to raise awareness about it and perhaps become a beacon of hope for those in the same boat.
Takeru recently spoke about the stigma associated with depression, particularly in his native Japan. The 34-year-old, however, is using his platform to address the subject, particularly for those suffering without support.
Takeru shared in a ONE Championship interview:

“There are actually a lot of people in Japan who suffer from the same disease, and they are fighting alone. I want to show them that even with this condition, you can compete in combat sports on the world stage and have results to show for it.”
Team leader Vasileus continued:
“Even now, when I’m not feeling well, I still get depressed sometimes. But I also want people to see me overcome that. I hope it can be a source of strength for them, which is why I came out publicly about my battle with mental illness.”
Meanwhile, Takeru returns to Circle at ONE 173 on November 16 in Tokyo. The former three-division K-1 champion will face Denis Puric in a flyweight kickboxing clash at the Ariake Arena.
Takeru says his trip to America helped improve his mental health
For Takeru, a change of scenery could prove beneficial for those suffering from mental health issues.
In addition to getting world-class training abroad, staying in America helped him deal with his problems.
“I met different characters seemingly imbued with open-mindedness. Everyone openly shared what they thought. Being exposed to that attitude really changed my way of thinking. That’s how I gradually improved,” the Japanese star told ONE.
