Team India’s ace batting Shubman Gill’s maiden series as ODI captain ended on a somber note as he was dismissed for 24 runs off 26 deliveries in the third match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday (October 25).

After disappointing outings in Perth and Adelaide, Gill launched his knock in the series finale smoothly alongside Rohit Sharma. The skipper hit two fours and a six as India made 68 runs in the powerplay while chasing a meager target of 236 runs.

Gill, however, couldn’t make the most of his start as he tried to nudge against a delivery in the lane outside off stump, and ended up getting a slight edge. He ends the three-match series with just 43 runs at an average of 14.33, as he is now six consecutive ODI innings without a fifty.

Fans pointed out that the captain’s record, coupled with a combination of poor batting, resulted in a forgettable series for the first match overall. Here are some of the reactions on social media:

Gill is a very good ODI player but I see that 58/100+ statistic far too easily for a player who has largely batted on beauties in his career. I know ODIs have been batting oriented since 2015 but there might be a slight shift towards bowling with new rules.

Gill can’t score 20+ even in the most batting friendly pitch of the series lol. They blamed the pitch in the first match, Rohit in the second. Who now?

#Gill doesn’t deserve a place in current form, left alone as captain.

Gill doesn’t even score on easy pitch now lmao

While all eyes were on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill had a bad series with the bat: 1st ODI: 10 2nd ODI: 9 3rd ODI: 24 Perhaps pressure from the captain? #INDvsAUS #INDvAUS #AUSvIND #AUSvsIND

Team India goes for chase despite Shubman Gill’s dismissal in 3rd ODI AUS vs IND 2025

The visitors were placed at 69-1 in the 11th over when Shubman Gill perished to give Australia their first breakthrough. The free-flowing opening partnership meant they had a considerable head start in the running game on a surface that played well for the majority, apart from sporadic instances of erratic bounce.

Virat Kohli overcame his back-to-back ducks with serious intent, while Rohit Sharma headed for his second consecutive fifty. At the time of writing, the Indian team stands at 102-1 after 16 overs with the veteran pair keeping the scoreboard ticking.
