Three employees of Qatar’s Amiri Diwan, its main government body, were killed in a car accident near the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, the Qatari embassy in Egypt said in a message published on X on Sunday.

The embassy said two other people were injured and were receiving necessary medical treatment at the city hospital.

Earlier, two security sources told Reuters that a car carrying Qatari diplomats overturned on a bend on a road 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city.

According to Aljazeera News, the embassy said the diplomats lost their lives while carrying out their official duties. Two other officials were injured in the accident and are currently being treated at a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh.

“The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Cairo extends its sincere condolences and sincere sympathy to the families of the deceased, praying that God will envelop them with His vast mercy, accept them into paradise and grant the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement said.

Sharm el-Sheikh recently hosted ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas aimed at ending the war in Gaza. The seaside city is also expected to host a global summit on Monday to finalize the truce deal.

The accident came days after officials from Qatar, Turkey and Egypt participated in indirect talks in Sharm el-Sheikh earlier this week, which led to an agreement between Israel and Hamas on the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war in Gaza.

The Egyptian city is expected to host a global summit on Monday aimed at finalizing the deal.
