Beijing:
A Chinese diplomat, who reported Reuters had been taken as an interrogation by the Chinese authorities, appeared on Friday evening during a diplomatic event in Beijing.
Sun Haiyan, a superior Chinese diplomat and former Singapore ambassador, appeared as a guest during an event organized by the India Embassy in Beijing.
In response to a question of Reuters at the event, Sun did not say directly if the authorities had held or questioned it, saying: “Well, I am here.” She described the “irresponsible” Reuters report. Reuters had pointed out on Friday that Sun had been taken to interrogate by the authorities earlier this month, citing three people knowing the issue, who asked for anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue. Reuters could not determine the questions that the interrogations concerned.
The Chinese authorities interviewed Sun roughly at the same time they interviewed Liu Jianchao, widely considered as a potential candidate of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, two of the three people with knowledge told Reuters.
