Kabul:
The United Nations said on Thursday that it followed strict rules for the distribution of international aid in Afghanistan, after a guard dog of the US government has been diverted by the Taliban authorities, including by collusion with UN officials.
The United Nations assistance mission in Afghanistan said it had taken “very seriously all the allegations of professional fault and corruption”, in a statement recognizing the report by the Special Inspector for the Reconstruction of Afghanistan (SIGAR) published on Wednesday.
The UN said that the delivery of aid to Afghanistan was “extremely complex”, marked by “interference and restriction attempts” by Taliban officials.
However, he stressed that “robust guarantees” were in place to “ensure international assistance critical for the Afghan people reached those who need it most”.
In interviews with 90 people, including the UN and representatives of the United States government, Sigar said that he had found that “the Taliban use all the means at their disposal, including the force, to ensure that the aid goes where they wish, as opposed to where the donors intend”.
