The man suspected of shooting and injuring five American soldiers on Wednesday at the base of Fort Stewart in the state of Georgia is also an American soldier, an American official told Reuters.

The official, who spoke under the cover of anonymity, cited the initial information and said that she could change.

The alleged shooter is in detention and more details on his identity were not immediately available. On Wednesday, military officials were due to have a press conference later.

The soldiers were treated on the spot and then transported to the community hospital in Winn for subsequent treatment, Stewart said in an article on Facebook. The authorities did not immediately provide more details on the state of the victims.

“There is no active threat to the community,” said the post.

The police responded to information reporting a shooting in the 2nd area of the armored brigade combat team at 10:56 a.m. (1456 GMT), and the base was locked shortly after 11:04 a.m., the suspect was arrested at 11:35 a.m., said Fort Stewart.

Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X that he and his family were “saddened by today’s tragedy” at the base. “We keep the victims, their families and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and our prayers, and we ask Georgians around the world,” he added.

President Donald Trump was informed of the shooting and monitored the situation, said the press secretary of the White House, Karoline Leavitt, told X.

Mass shooting is relatively common in the United States, where firearms are widely available, and military bases, which are among the country’s most safety places, have not been spared.

The deadliest was at the base of the army of Fort Hood in 2009, when an adult died fatally unarmed soldiers in a medical building with a handgun at the sight of the laser, killing 13 people and injuring more than 30 years later, a soldier from the same base of Texas killed three soldiers fatally and injured 16 others before suicide.

In 2013, an employee of a government defense entrepreneur killed 12 people at Washington’s Navy Yard. In 2019, a Lieutenant of the Saudi Air Force pulled and killed three people and injured eight others in a base of the US Navy in Pensacola, Florida.

Fort Stewart is located in Hinesville, around 225 miles (362 km) south-east of Atlanta and 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Savannah. According to the 2020 census, nearly 9,000 people live at the base.

The base supports around 15,000 army soldiers in active service, as well as thousands of military retirees, family members and others, according to its website.
