Canada plans to recognize the state of Palestine at a United Nations meeting in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday, increasing the pressure on Israel while famine spreads to Gaza.
The announcement reached after France said last week that it would recognize a Palestinian state and one day after Great Britain said it would recognize the state at the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in September if the fighting in Gaza, part of the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel, had not stopped at that time.
Carney told journalists that reality on the ground, including the famine of people in Gaza, meant that “the prospect of a Palestinian state literally retreats before our eyes”.
“Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has enabled a disaster to take place in Gaza,” he said.
Carney said that the planned recognition was partly based on repeated insurance of the Palestinian authority, which represents the state of Palestine to the UN, that it reformed its governance and is willing to organize general elections in 2026 in which Hamas “cannot play any role”.
