Columbia University Disciplines 80 students on a pro-Palestinian event

The University of Columbia disciplined dozens of demonstrators of pro-Palestinian students who seized part of the main library of the school during a demonstration in early May which led to multiple arrests.

After the demonstration, the university began an investigation into rules of the rules, prohibited campus participants and placed them on an interim suspension, he said.

He published his final decisions on Tuesday.

Columbia for Palestine, a pro-Palestinian group at school, said 80 students on Tuesday had been informed on Monday of their sanctions.

He said disciplinary measures have marked “the most suspensions for a single political demonstration in the history of the Columbia campus” and exceeded previous disciplinary measures announced against people during other demonstrations.

In March, the Trump administration said it penalized university on how it had managed Pro-Palestinian demonstrations from last year to cancel hundreds of millions of dollars in research grants.

He argued that Columbia’s response to anti -Semitism and alleged harassment of Jewish and Israeli members of the university community was insufficient.

After the government announced the financing cancellations, the school announced a series of commitments in response to the concerns of the administration.

“We support freedom of expression,” the school said in a statement at the time. “But the demonstrations and other protest activities that occur in academic buildings and places where academic activities take place present a direct obstacle to the maintenance of our basic academic mission.”

The demonstrators, including certain Jewish groups, say that the Trump administration wrongly confused their criticism of the military aggression of Israel in Gaza with anti -Semitism and them to advocate for Palestinian rights with support for extremism.

The devastating military campaign of Israel in Gaza followed a fatal attack in October 2023 against Israel by Hamas, the militant organization which ruled Gaza.

Last week, the Columbia adopted a controversial definition of anti -Semitism which equivalent to opposition to Zionism.

The school also said that it would no longer engage with the pro-Palestinian group Columbia University Apartheid Discid.

The government has also attempted to use the leverage of federal funding with other educational establishments, including Harvard University, on campus demonstrations. He also tried to expel certain foreign pro-Palestinian students, but faced judicial roadblocks.

Defenders of rights have raised concerns about regular procedure, academic freedom and freedom of expression on government’s actions.
