The Trump administration has considerably reduced the scope of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), canceling 83% of its programs following a six-week exam to reduce public spending and reduce what the administration calls “waste”.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that 5,200 contracts, worth tens of billions of dollars, had been canceled, some of these programs even causing damage to the national interests of the United States. Although Rubio did not specify which programs have been linked, he said that the remaining 1,000 programs would be managed more effectively within the framework of the State Department, with the contributions of the Congress.

In his declaration, Rubio also thanked the Ministry of Government Effectiveness (DOGE), led by billionaire Elon Musk, for having contributed to reform efforts. Musk, who was an ardent defender of waste reduction in the federal government, replied: “Difficult, but necessary. Good job with you. The important parties of USAID should have always been with the State Department.”

This decision comes after the administration of Trump’s second mandate has taken office, leading to a 90 -day break on foreign aid, which launched USAID in the troubles. The stop has had an impact on global humanitarian efforts, including delivery of food and medical aid, while triggering layoffs and leaving thousands of employees. USAID, once employing more than 10,000 people, has faced a reduction in significant workforce, with reports indicating that less than 300 staff members can remain in the agency.

Hundreds of American diplomats have expressed their opposition to the cuts, warning that the frost of foreign aid endangers partnerships with allies and could open doors to opponents to extend their influence.
