NEW YORK: The new interim authorities in Syria have created an opportunity to rid the country of chemical weapons and guarantee compliance with the chemical weapons Convention (CWC), Pakistan on the Security Council on Friday.
“Everyone should take the current opportunity to solve the pending problems in Syria, including those related to chemical weapons,” said a debate on a debate on the Middle East (Syria / chemical weapons) on Friday.
“We urge continuous dialogue, cooperation and full compliance with the CWC and the resolution of the Security Council as a means of closing the Syrian chemical weapons file as soon as possible,” he added.
The resolution forced Syria to declare and fully destroy its chemical arsenal under the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and warned consequences, in particular under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which provides for implementing measures to respond to threats to international peace and security.
Since Syria joined the CWC in 2013, the custody of chemical weapons has repeatedly raised concerns concerning the accuracy and exhaustiveness of its declarations
In his remarks, ambassador Akram said Pakistan condemns the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere, in all circumstances.
“We consider the convention on chemical weapons as a pillar of global arms control and disarmament,” he said, adding that Pakistan remains determined to advance CWC objectives and maintain the effectiveness of the OPCW, the impartiality and the protection of its verification mechanisms, “he said.
“We support the continuous efforts for the universal membership of the CWC and its complete, effective and non -discriminatory implementation.”
At the same time, ambassador Akram said that Pakistan supported the stabilization of Syria through an instant political process, belonging to Syrian and Syrian facilitated by the UN, and stressed the need to maintain the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.
Terrorists should not be allowed to access the weapons of mass destruction, including chemical weapons in accordance with the provisions of Security Council resolution 1540 (2004), he said.
Noting the engagement of the new Syrian interim authorities to secure suspected chemical weapons and their cooperation with the OPCW, the Pakistani envoy has called to answer long -standing questions and to guarantee unhindered access to allow an independent and complete verification by the OPCW on the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria and any threat of proliferation in terms of compliance with the CWC.
“We urge consensus and unity within the Council by addressing all the outstanding questions linked to Syria and the restoration of normality in Syria and the preservation of peace and security in the region,” added Akram ambassador.
Information of the council of 15 members, Izumi Nakamitsu, high representative of disarmament affairs, praised the measures taken by the new authorities of the country to engage with the OPCW) and work at full compliance with international law.
