A member of the Hindu Party in power of India was sworn in Thursday as Delhi’s chief minister after an electoral landslide has given him control of the capital for the first time in decades.

Rekha Gupta, 50, from the Bharatiya Janata (BJP) party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the fourth woman to serve as chief minister of the sprawling megapacity of more than 30 million people.

The BJP is in the government nationally but has not controlled the local legislative assembly in Delhi since 1998, therefore its radical victory taking more than two thirds of the seats in the February 5 polls was both symbolic and strategically important.

GUPTA, who holds a law diploma and began his career in student policy in the city, was selected on Wednesday for party members.

“I will be faithfully and impartially exercised the office of the office,” said Gupta while taking the oath of office in front of a crowd of acclaimers.

Modi, who was present at the ceremony, said in an article on X that Gupta had “resurrected the base” to become the Minister of Chief.

“I am convinced that she will work for the development of Delhi with full vigor,” he added.

The elections ousted the Aam Aadmi (AAP) party, whose chief Arvind Kejriwal had governed Delhi for the last decade and was an eminent critic of Modi.

Kejriwal went up to power as an anti-corruption cross, but spent several months behind bars last year for the accusations that his party took bribes in exchange for alcohol license.

He denied reprehensible acts and characterized the accusations of hunting political witch by the government of Modi.

Victory is a boost for the BJP and Modi, 74, who won a third term after the elections last year, but with a reduced vote which forced him to count on coalition partners to govern.

Gupta faces major challenges, including the monumental atmospheric pollution crisis of Delhi, which stifles the city in dangerous smoke for months during the winter.

New Delhi is regularly classified the worst capital in the world to stifle the SMOG, which often increases up to 60 times the recommended daily life of the World Health Organization.

Years of initiative by the fragmental government have failed to solve the problem, the SMOG, blamed for thousands of premature deaths per year and particularly affecting the health of children and the elderly.

None of the main parties made the fight against the health crisis a focal point of their campaigns.
