At least two people died after a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff of the Covington municipal airport in Georgia on Saturday evening.
According to local police, the Rockwell commander’s plane took off around 11:00 p.m. but lost contact shortly after. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) alerted the authorities of Covington at 11:21 pm, which prompted the agents to locate the wreck in a wooded area north of the track. The two individuals on board were declared dead on the scene.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. The authorities have not yet published details on the victims.
The latter incident is following a series of fatal aviation accidents in the United States in recent weeks. On January 29, an American Airlines plane collided with a military helicopter near Washington, DC, killing 67 people. A few days later, a medical transportation jet crashed in a district of Philadelphia, affirming seven lives, and a small suburban plane in Alaska fell, killing the 10 passengers.
Investigators continue to probe these incidents in the midst of increasing concerns about air security.
