At least 30 people remain missing following a devastating landslide that hit the village of Jinping in the Chinese province of Southwest Sichuan.

The disaster, which occurred at 11:50 am local time (03:50 GMT), buried ten houses and trapped several residents. So far, two people have been rescued, while the emergency teams run against the weather to find survivors.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for an “all -landed” rescue operation, urging the authorities to minimize the victims and quickly manage the consequences. Prime Minister Li Qiang has also asked officials to study geological risks in the surrounding areas and to evacuate those who risk other landslides.

Rescue efforts are carried out by hundreds of emergencies, with around 200 residents already evacuated from the disaster area. The images of the Chinese state media show a massive collapse of mud and rock that crosses the village, leaving destruction in its wake.

The authorities allocated 50 million yuan ($ 6.9 million) of central government funds to repair infrastructure and restore essential public services.

The mountainous land of the region makes it particularly subject to landslides. Last month, a similar disaster in the province of Yunnan killed dozens, while another landslide 11 years ago cost the same region.
