Petro Gazz pulled the rug out from under Chery Tiggo with a 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-7 upset in the PVL All-Filipino Conference Tuesday night at the PhilSports Arena from Pasig City.
The duo of Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Myla Pablo powered the Angels to a come-from-behind victory with 18 points each for their fifth straight win at 6-1.

“I appreciate the Chery Tiggo team. It was an exciting match,” said coach Koji Tsuzurabara. “In the first and second set, my team didn’t communicate well. But the two in the middle, Joy (Dacoron) and Ranya (Musa ), are the starting members of the three sets so they could change the atmosphere. They put in a good performance.
“The players communicated more strongly and it ended in a victory. I appreciate today’s players… Everyone today should improve,” added the Japanese mentor.

Pontillas had 16 kills, a block and an ace while Pablo had 15 kills and three blocks. Nicole Tiamzon contributed 11 points while Brooke van Sickle, who played limited minutes and played off the bench in the first four sets, still finished with 10 points, including seven from the fifth period as well as 11 excellent recoveries.
Van Sickle underwent minor surgery on his left knee after Petro Gazz’s final match last year, hence a precautionary measure.
Chie Saet turned on Petro Gazz’s offense with 12 excellent sets while Jellie Tempiatura grabbed 20 excellent digs to take solo first place. Ranya Musa has returned after a long recovery from injury.

Chery Tiggo looked poised for an easy victory before a sudden fight from Petro Gazz in the third frame after an 18-10 disadvantage as Maizo-Pontillas warmed up to give the Angels momentum.
After a push and pull start in the fourth quarter, Petro Gazz went on a 10-0 run to tie the match at two sets apiece. Pablo gave the Angels a five-point lead in the deciding frame as a 5-2 run capped by a disappointing Ara Galang service error ended the affair.
Cza Carandang led the Crossovers with 13 points while Pauline Gaston and Jas Nabor, who played as wingers at one point, added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Nabor also had 14 excellent sets.
Jennifer Nierva finished with 21 excellent sets and 12 excellent receptions and Cess Robles 12 excellent digs apart from eight points as Chery Tiggo, who has yet to dress new cog Risa Sato, fell to a 4-3 record .
Petro Gazz enjoys a long break before their next match against ZUS Coffee on February 4 while Chery Tiggo looks to bounce back against Farm Fresh on January 25, both at the PhilSports Arena.
