MANILA, Philippines — With a sudden surge last year fueled by a stronger connection, the Petro Gazz Angels are looking to maintain that momentum ahead of the resumption of the 2024-25 Pan-Philippine PVL Conference.

The Angels have won four straight games to finish 2024 atop the standings with a 5-1 record with Brooke Van Sickle maintaining her MVP form and Myla Pablo displaying her resurgence.

But both setters Djanel Cheng and Chie Saet believe the key to their winning streak lies in their stronger chemistry.

“Our job as a passer becomes easier, especially for Djanel and me, when we have attackers like Myla and Brooke,” Saet said. “The responsibility we have as smugglers is difficult because we always have to adapt to different timings.”

Their improved passing, an obvious result of their improved chemistry, has also led to their strong start in this six-month competition.

“I think our passing was a big factor. As passers we gain our confidence through passing, and of course if we have good passing we can send the ball correctly to the attackers,” Saet said.

Cheng credited the better communication with Japanese coach Koji Tsuzurabara and the coaching staff’s dedication to improving players and scouting opponents.

“We all had communication, although it wasn’t perfect, there was better communication with coach Koji and between the players,” Cheng said. “Our stats showed we had a good read of the opponent and the support in every game helped us. Those on the edge immediately pointed out the opponent’s weaknesses, how to approach the game and what type of sets to use.
