DJ Kennedy is happy to get the chance to suit up as Meralco’s temporary import in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup as he gives original pick Akil Mitchell time to recover from a broken nose.
For Kennedy, whose 32 points, six rebounds and four assists propelled the Bolts to a 96-91 victory over Terrafirma Dyip at Ninoy Aquino Stadium, he is fine with doing double duty if it benefits the primary task for which he signed up for at the beginning.

“They give me the opportunity to find a rhythm, to have a little flow not only in the PBA, but also in the EASL,” Kennedy said after overcoming the difficulties of the first half and the problems of fouls to help the Bolts take a big lead, then set up the pass that allowed Jansen Rios to hit an open three that prevented a shock loss to winless Dyip.
Kennedy was thrust onto the PBA scene after Mitchell was injured just 15 seconds into Sunday’s win over Rain or Shine when he was hit by a tough Keith Datu.
While coach Luigi Trillo hinted that Mitchell could return sooner rather than later, Meralco opted to go with Kennedy, who is one of three reinforcements in the East Asian Super League along with Mitchell and the player naturalized Ange Kouame.

Meralco was tight-lipped on how he would approach his import situation for upcoming tournament games, but Kennedy supports whatever decision Bolts management makes.
“Whoever they decide with, I will support it,” he said. “I love the opportunity to play (more), but like I said, I’ll support you either way.”
Meralco improved to a perfect 3-0 record despite the injury situation as the Bolts took a share of the lead with NorthPort idle.
Chris Newsome added 15 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals to contribute to the victory.
I almost ruined everything
The Bolts, however, almost squandered a certain victory as the Dyips struggled behind new imports Brandon Edwards and Vic Manuel.
Edwards had 21 points and 13 rebounds in a performance that was a huge contrast to lousy Ryan Richards. But he missed a potential basket that allowed Rios’ triple to break a 91 tie with nine seconds remaining.
Manuel turned the ball over inbounds, which would have allowed him to score an open field goal on the next play, and the Dyip fell to 0-4.
Manuel finished with 13 points, including eight in the fourth, and his confidence continues to grow after injuries and a lack of playing time marred his final conferences with the San Miguel Beermen. INQ
